Getting your vehicle ready before its MOT test can save you time, money, and the hassle of a retest. Many common MOT failures are caused by simple issues that can be checked and fixed in advance.
Use this guide to make sure your car is prepared and has the best chance of passing first time.
Lights & Bulbs
Faulty lights are one of the most common reasons for MOT failures, but they’re also one of the easiest to fix.
Check all exterior lights including:
- Headlights (main beam and dipped).
- Brake lights.
- Indicators.
- Number plate lights.
- Rear lights and fog lights.
Make sure all bulbs are working correctly and lenses are clean and not damaged.
Tyres & Tread Depth
Your tyres must meet the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.
Before your MOT:
- Check tread depth on all tyres.
- Look for uneven wear or damage.
- Ensure tyres are properly inflated.
Worn or damaged tyres can lead to an instant failure, so it’s worth checking them carefully.
Wipers & Screenwash
Clear visibility is essential for safety and is checked during an MOT.
Make sure:
- Wiper blades are in good condition and not streaking.
- Screenwash is topped up.
- Windscreen is clean and free from major cracks or chips.
